  14. the basic routines for allocating memory, searching directories, opening and
  15. closing files, reading and writing files, string handling, pattern matching,
  16. arithmetic, and so on.</para>

  29. <title>Installation of Glibc</title>
  30. <note><para>Some packages outside of LFS suggest installing GNU libiconv in
  31. order to translate data from one encoding to another. The project's home page
  32. (<ulink url="http://www.gnu.org/software/libiconv/"/>) says <quote>This library
  33. provides an <function>iconv()</function> implementation, for use on systems
  34. which don't have one, or whose implementation cannot convert from/to Unicode.
  35. </quote> Glibc provides an <function>iconv()</function> implementation and can
  36. convert from/to Unicode, therefore libiconv is not required on an LFS
  37. system.</para></note>
  38. <para>This package is known to have issues when its default
  39. optimization flags (including the <parameter>-march</parameter> and
  40. <parameter>-mcpu</parameter> options) are changed. If any environment
  41. variables that override default optimizations have been defined, such
  42. as <envar>CFLAGS</envar> and <envar>CXXFLAGS</envar>,
  43. unset them when building Glibc.</para>
  44. <para>The Glibc build system is self-contained and will install
  45. perfectly, even though the compiler specs file and linker are still
  46. pointing at <filename class="directory">/tools</filename>. The specs
  47. and linker cannot be adjusted before the Glibc install because the
  48. Glibc autoconf tests would give false results and defeat the goal
  49. of achieving a clean build.</para>
  50. <para>The linuxthreads tarball contains the man pages for the
  51. threading libraries installed by Glibc. Unpack the tarball from
  52. within the Glibc source directory:</para>

  54. <para>Glibc has two tests which fail when the running kernel is 2.6.11 or later.
  55. The problem has been determined to be with the tests themselves, not with the
  56. C library or the kernel. This patch fixes the problem:</para>

  58. <para>Apply the following patches to enable Glibc to compile with

  65. tests on x86 processors when compiled with GCC-&gcc-version;:</para>

  88. considered critical. Do not skip it under any
  89. circumstance.</para></important>

  94. <para>On at least i686 you can expect to see failures in the <emphasis>test-double
  95. </emphasis> and <emphasis>test-idouble</emphasis> math tests with
  96. gcc-&gcc-version;, as well as an expected (ignored) failure in <emphasis>
  97. posix/annexc</emphasis>. These two failures in the math tests appear to be
  98. harmless.</para>
  99. <para>The Glibc test suite is highly dependent on certain functions of
  100. the host system, in particular the kernel. In certain circumstances,
  101. some failures are unavoidable. This is a list of the most common
  102. issues:</para>
  103. <itemizedlist>
  104. <listitem><para>The <emphasis>math</emphasis> tests sometimes fail in other tests
  105. when running
  106. on systems where the CPU is not a relatively new genuine Intel or authentic AMD.
  107. Certain optimization settings are also known to be a factor here.</para></listitem>
  108. <listitem><para>The <emphasis>gettext</emphasis> test sometimes fails due to
  109. host system issues. The exact reasons are not yet clear.</para></listitem>
  110. <listitem><para>If you have mounted the LFS partition with the
  111. <parameter>noatime</parameter> option, the <emphasis>atime</emphasis> test will
  112. fail. As mentioned in <xref linkend="space-mounting"/>, do not use the
  113. <parameter>noatime</parameter> option while building LFS.</para></listitem>
  114. <listitem><para>When running on older and slower hardware, some tests
  115. can fail because of test timeouts being exceeded.</para></listitem>
  116. </itemizedlist>
  117. <para>Though it is a harmless message, the install stage of Glibc will
  118. complain about the absence of <filename>/etc/ld.so.conf</filename>.
  119. Prevent this warning with:</para>
  120. <screen><userinput>touch /etc/ld.so.conf</userinput></screen>
  121. <para>Install the package:</para>
  122. <screen><userinput>make install</userinput></screen>
  123. <para>The locales that can make the system respond in a different
  124. language were not installed by the above command. Install this
  125. with:</para>
  126. <screen><userinput>make localedata/install-locales</userinput></screen>
  127. <para>To save time, an alternative to running the
  128. previous command (which generates and installs every locale Glibc is
  129. aware of) is to install only those locales that are wanted and needed.
  130. This can be achieved by using the <command>localedef</command>
  131. command. Information on this command is located in the
  132. <filename>INSTALL</filename> file in the Glibc source. However, there
  133. are a number of locales that are essential in order for the tests of
  134. future packages to pass, in particular, the
  135. <emphasis>libstdc++</emphasis> tests from GCC. The following
  136. instructions, instead of the <parameter>install-locales</parameter>
  137. target used above, will install the minimum set of locales necessary
  138. for the tests to run successfully:</para>

  151. <para>Some locales installed by the <command>make
  152. localedata/install-locales</command> command above are not properly
  153. supported by some applications that are in the LFS and BLFS books.
  154. Because of the various problems that arise due to application
  155. programmers making assumptions that break in such locales, LFS should
  156. not be used in locales that utilize multibyte character sets
  157. (including UTF-8) or right-to-left writing order. Numerous unofficial
  158. and unstable patches are required to fix these problems, and it has
  159. been decided by the LFS developers not to support such complex locales. This applies to the
  160. ja_JP and fa_IR locales as well&mdash;they have been installed only for
  161. GCC and Gettext tests to pass, and the <command>watch</command> program
  162. (part of the Procps package) does not work properly in them. Various
  163. attempts to circumvent these restrictions are documented in
  164. internationalization-related hints.</para>
  165. <para>Build the linuxthreads man pages, which are a great reference
  166. on the threading API (applicable to NPTL as well):</para>

  224. needed by programs as they are run. However, if there are libraries in
  225. directories other than <filename class="directory">/lib</filename> and
  226. <filename class="directory">/usr/lib</filename>, these need to be
  227. added to the <filename>/etc/ld.so.conf</filename> file in order
  228. for the dynamic loader to find them. Two directories that are commonly
  229. known to contain additional libraries are <filename
  230. class="directory">/usr/local/lib</filename> and <filename
  231. class="directory">/opt/lib</filename>, so add those directories to the
  232. dynamic loader's search path.</para>
