  2. <sect2><title>Configuring Shadow Password Suite</title>
  3. <para>This package contains utilities to modify users' passwords, add
  4. or delete users and groups, and the like. We're not going to explain what
  5. 'password shadowing' means. A full explanation can be found in the doc/HOWTO
  6. file within the unpacked shadow password suite's source tree. There's one
  7. thing to keep in mind if you decide to use shadow support: programs that
  8. need to verify passwords (for example xdm, ftp daemons, pop3 daemons) need
  9. to be 'shadow-compliant', that is they need to be able to work with
  10. shadowed passwords.</para>
  11. <para>To enable shadowed passwords, run the following command:</para>
  12. <screen><userinput>/usr/sbin/pwconv</userinput></screen>
  13. <para>And to enable shadowed group passwords, run the following
  14. command:</para>
  15. <screen><userinput>/usr/sbin/grpconv</userinput></screen>
  16. <para>Under normal circumstances, you won't have created any passwords yet.
  17. However, if returning to this section to enable shadowing, you should reset any
  18. current user passwords with the <userinput>passwd</userinput> command or any
  19. group passwords with the <userinput>gpasswd</userinput> command.</para>
