  34. <title>Installation of Linux API Headers</title>
  35. <para>The Linux kernel needs to expose an Application Programming Interface
  36. (API) for the system's C library (Glibc in LFS) to use. This is done
  37. by way of sanitizing various C header files that are shipped in the Linux
  38. kernel source tarball.</para>
  39. <para>First, make sure there are no stale files and dependencies lying around
  40. from previous activity:</para>
  41. <screen><userinput remap="install">make mrproper</userinput></screen>
  42. <para>Now test and extract the user-visible kernel headers from the source.
  43. They are placed in an intermediate local directory and copied to the needed
  44. location because the extraction process removes any existing files in
  45. the target directory.</para>
