  35. <para>Fix a potential issue if <filename>/etc/ld.so.preload</filename> is
  36. used on the host system.</para>

  38. <para>The Glibc documentation recommends building Glibc outside of the source
  39. directory in a dedicated build directory:</para>

  42. <para>Because Glibc no longer supports i386, its developers say to use the
  43. compiler flag <parameter>-march=i486</parameter> when building it for x86
  44. machines. There are several ways to accomplish that, but testing shows that
  45. the flag is best placed inside the build variable <quote>CFLAGS</quote>.
  46. Instead of overriding completely what Glibc's internal build system uses
  47. for CFLAGS, append the new flag to the existing contents of CFLAGS by
  48. making use of the special file <filename>configparms</filename>. The
  49. -mtune=native flag is also necessary to reset a reasonable value for -mtune
  50. that is changed when setting -march.</para>

  110. <para>When building from hosts that include SELinux functionality
  111. (e.g., Fedora Core 3), Glibc will build with support for SELinux.
  112. As the LFS tools environment does not contain support for SELinux, a
  113. Glibc compiled with such support will fail to operate correctly.</para>

  125. <para>The missing or incompatible <command>msgfmt</command> program is
  126. generally harmless, but it can sometimes cause issues when running the
  127. test suite. This <command>msgfmt</command> program is part of the
  128. Gettext package which the host distribution should provide. If
  129. <command>msgfmt</command> is present but deemed incompatible, upgrade
  130. the host system's Gettext package or continue without it and see if
  131. the test suite runs without problems regardless.</para>
  132. <para>Compile the package:</para>
  133. <screen><userinput remap="make">make</userinput></screen>
  134. <para>This package does come with a test suite, however, it cannot be
  135. run at this time because we do not have a C++ compiler yet.</para>
  136. <para>The install stage of Glibc will issue a harmless warning at the
  137. end about the absence of <filename>/tools/etc/ld.so.conf</filename>.
  138. Prevent this warning with:</para>

  141. <para>Install the package:</para>
  142. <screen><userinput remap="install">make install</userinput></screen>
  143. <para>Different countries and cultures have varying conventions for
  144. how to communicate. These conventions range from the format for
  145. representing dates and times to more complex issues, such as the
  146. language spoken. The <quote>internationalization</quote> of GNU
  147. programs works by locale.</para>
