  2. <title>Entering the chroot'ed environment</title>
  3. <para>
  4. It's time to enter our chroot'ed environment in order to install the
  5. rest of the software we need.
  6. </para>
  7. <para>
  8. Enter the following command to enter the chroot'ed environment. From
  9. this point on there's no need to use the $LFS variable anymore, because
  10. everything you do will be restricted to the LFS partition (since / is
  11. actually /mnt/lfs but the shell doesn't know that).
  12. </para>
  13. <blockquote><literallayout>
  14. <userinput>cd $LFS &amp;&amp;</userinput>
  15. <userinput>chroot $LFS /usr/bin/env -i HOME=/root \
  16. TERM=$TERM /bin/bash --login</userinput>
  17. </literallayout></blockquote>
  18. <para>
  19. The TERM=`echo $TERM` construction will set the $TERM value inside
  20. chroot to the same value as outside chroot which is needed for programs
  21. like vim and less to operate properly.
  22. </para>
  23. <para>
  24. Now that we are inside a chroot'ed environment, we can continue to
  25. install all the basic system software. Make sure you execute all the
  26. following commands in this and following chapters from within the
  27. chroot'ed environment. If you ever leave this environment for a reason
  28. (say when you reboot or something) don't forget to mount $LFS/proc again
  29. like you did earlier and to re-enter chroot before you continue with the
  30. book.
  31. </para>
  32. <para>
  33. Note that the bash prompt will contain "I have no name!". This is
  34. normal; Glibc hasn't been installed yet.
  35. </para>
