  27. <title>Installation of Glibc</title>
  28. <note><para>Some packages outside of LFS suggest installing GNU libiconv in
  29. order to translate data from one encoding to another. The project's home page
  30. (<ulink url="http://www.gnu.org/software/libiconv/"/>) says <quote>This library
  31. provides an <function>iconv()</function> implementation, for use on systems
  32. which don't have one, or whose implementation cannot convert from/to Unicode.
  33. </quote> Glibc provides an <function>iconv()</function> implementation and can
  34. convert from/to Unicode, therefore libiconv is not required on an LFS
  35. system.</para></note>
  36. <para>This package is known to have issues when its default
  37. optimization flags (including the <parameter>-march</parameter> and
  38. <parameter>-mcpu</parameter> options) are changed. If any environment
  39. variables that override default optimizations have been defined, such
  40. as <envar>CFLAGS</envar> and <envar>CXXFLAGS</envar>,
  41. unset them when building Glibc.</para>
  42. <para>The Glibc build system is self-contained and will install
  43. perfectly, even though the compiler specs file and linker are still
  44. pointing at <filename class="directory">/tools</filename>. The specs
  45. and linker cannot be adjusted before the Glibc install because the
  46. Glibc autoconf tests would give false results and defeat the goal
  47. of achieving a clean build.</para>
  48. <para>The linuxthreads tarball contains the man pages for the
  49. threading libraries installed by Glibc. Unpack the tarball from
  50. within the Glibc source directory:</para>

  52. <para>In certain rare circumstances, Glibc can segfault when no standard search
  53. directories exist. The following patch prevents this:</para>

  55. <para>Glibc has two tests which fail when the running kernel is 2.6.11.x The
  56. problem has been determined to be with the tests themselves, not with the libc
  57. nor the kernel. This patch fixes the problem:</para>

  85. <para>The Glibc test suite is highly dependent on certain functions of
  86. the host system, in particular the kernel. In general, the Glibc test
  87. suite is always expected to pass. However, in certain circumstances,
  88. some failures are unavoidable. This is a list of the most common
  89. issues:</para>
  90. <itemizedlist>
  91. <listitem><para>The <emphasis>math</emphasis> tests sometimes fail when running
  92. on systems where the CPU is not a relatively new genuine Intel or authentic AMD.
  93. Certain optimization settings are also known to be a factor here.</para></listitem>
  94. <listitem><para>The <emphasis>gettext</emphasis> test sometimes fails due to
  95. host system issues. The exact reasons are not yet clear.</para></listitem>
  96. <listitem><para>If you have mounted the LFS partition with the
  97. <parameter>noatime</parameter> option, the <emphasis>atime</emphasis> test will
  98. fail. As mentioned in <xref linkend="space-mounting"/>, do not use the
  99. <parameter>noatime</parameter> option while building LFS.</para></listitem>
  100. <listitem><para>When running on older and slower hardware, some tests
  101. can fail because of test timeouts being exceeded.</para></listitem>
  102. </itemizedlist>
  103. <para>Though it is a harmless message, the install stage of Glibc will
  104. complain about the absence of <filename>/etc/ld.so.conf</filename>.
  105. Prevent this warning with:</para>

  109. <para>The locales that can make the system respond in a different
  110. language were not installed by the above command. Install this
  111. with:</para>

  113. <para>To save time, an alternative to running the
  114. previous command (which generates and installs every locale listed in the
  115. glibc-&glibc-version;/localedata/SUPPORTED file) is to install only those
  116. locales that are wanted and needed. This can be achieved by using the
  117. <command>localedef</command> command. Information on this command is located in
  118. the <filename>INSTALL</filename> file in the Glibc source. However, there
  119. are a number of locales that are essential in order for the tests of
  120. future packages to pass, in particular, the
  121. <emphasis>libstdc++</emphasis> tests from GCC. The following
  122. instructions, instead of the <parameter>install-locales</parameter>
  123. target used above, will install the minimum set of locales necessary
  124. for the tests to run successfully:</para>

  137. <para>Some locales installed by the <command>make
  138. localedata/install-locales</command> command above are not properly
  139. supported by some applications that are in the LFS and BLFS books.
  140. Because of the various problems that arise due to application
  141. programmers making assumptions that break in such locales, LFS should
  142. not be used in locales that utilize multibyte character sets
  143. (including UTF-8) or right-to-left writing order. Numerous unofficial
  144. and unstable patches are required to fix these problems, and it has
  145. been decided by the LFS developers not to support such complex locales at this
  146. time. This applies to the ja_JP and fa_IR locales as well&mdash;they have been
  147. installed only for GCC and Gettext tests to pass, and the
  148. <command>watch</command> program (part of the Procps package) does not work
  149. properly in them. Various attempts to circumvent these restrictions are
  150. documented in internationalization-related hints.</para>
  151. <para>Build the linuxthreads man pages, which are a great reference
  152. on the threading API (applicable to NPTL as well):</para>
