  1. These are the TODO items for the next LFS release (3.0):
  2. * When installing Glibc in chapter 6 we are only missing two files:
  3. pt_chown and mtrace. See if we can find the cause of these missing.
  4. * Rewrite all of the mailinglist info (book and website) and give more
  5. information how you can set to things like digest, digest2, vacation
  6. and other useful modes.
  7. * Move the explanations in MAKEDEV's installation to the "Command
  8. * explanation" section (also move from chap6 to chap5)
  9. * Unmount $LFS/proc when done with chapter 7
  10. * Check out alternative findutils patch in
  11. * http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/findutils-4.1.alternative-patch
  12. * Check to see if the man pages from the ld.so package also come with
  13. the man-pages package.
  14. * Incorporate LFS FAQ in the book
  15. * In console-tools-0.2.3/doc/man, there are more files ending in *.in
  16. that need to be renamed and copied to /usr/share/man. But before we
  17. copy any files we should modify them first and change the @datadir@
  18. occurances in those files to it's proper location (/usr/share IIRC)
  19. * Work on intel/preface/whoread.sgml and change the working to make it
  20. flow and sound nicer. Use
  21. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/whoread-draft.txt as a base
  22. (this is a draft by Oren Byer, based on an earlier draft by Gerard
  23. Beekmans).
  24. * After entering chroot check the $TERM variable and set it properly if
  25. needed
  26. * Add dedicated package version number entities (to avoid having to make
  27. changes to 2-7 files to just change the version number of a package).
  28. * Get rid of the codes 'pp' in chapter 5 entities, 'in' in chapter 6
  29. entities and the like with other chapters.
  30. * Re-arrange the list in chapter 3 to match the order in which
  31. packages are installed.
  32. * Full dependency list. This list isn't a list of "package a depends on
  33. package b" but a list like "package b depends on the files c, d and e
  34. from package f".
  35. * Bring the book up to speed with the current FHS specs.
  36. * Mention security patches that can be applied to packages.
  37. * At the end of the book suggest the user create the /etc/lfs-<version>
  38. file and give a few reasons why the user would want
  39. such a file (example: it's easy to forget after a while which LFS version
  40. you run; it makes debugging easier for us knowing which LFS version a user
  41. is running).
  42. * Explain how changing runlevels works. Use the file written by Simon
  43. Perreault at http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/runlevels.txt
  44. * Don't run lilo from inside chroot anymore. This causes severe problems
  45. sometimes including LILO not bootstrapping properly.
  46. * Bring back the PPC book (recreate from scratch using current intel
  47. book) using Jesse McCrosky's notes at
  48. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-notes.txt
  49. and the patch to the 'patch' package at:
  50. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-patch.patch
  51. * Add descriptions what the patches do we use (like the console-tools and gzip
  52. patches)
  53. * Try out Slackware's MAKEDEV script and see if it's any better than the
  54. currently used one. A copy can be found at
  55. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/Slackware-MAKEDEV
  56. * Sed'ing the MAKEDEV script gives us hda[1-20], hdb[1-20] and so forth.
  57. Mention that all of these can't actually be used due to kernel
  58. limitations (IDE goes to 16 max for example).
  59. * Type in chapter 2 - how to install software: Last paragraph:
  60. s/There is on exception/There is one exception/
  61. * Rewrite chapter 2 a little bit. Add that export LFS=/mnt/lfs could be
  62. added to root's .bash_profile/.bashrc (outside chroot) to make sure
  63. that between build sessions the variable is still set.
  64. * Add to chapter 2 how to use .gz files (not just .tar.gz)
  65. * Mention LFS should be installed as user root
  66. * 'init S' has been reported not to work properly. Test this.
  67. * Add netkit-base and net-tools to Appendix A.
  68. * Use /etc/HOSTNAME for setting the hostname. This is a bit more
  69. compliant with other distributions and therefore less confusing to
  70. people.
  71. * Suggest using this command to strip debug symbols after you finish
  72. chapter 6: find $LFS -type f -exec strip --strip-debug '{}' ';'
  73. * Modify the killproc function in the functions script. Right now it
  74. works roughly as follows: killl, wait 2 secs, check if pid's are gone.
  75. If not, kill with -KILL (aka -9), wait 2 secs, checkif pid's are gone.
  76. If no, print error message.
  77. Change this into: kill, don't wait 2 secs but check for pid's right
  78. away. If pid's are still there, then wait 2 seconds and kill -KILL,
  79. wait, if pid's still there, print error. Most daemons will exit
  80. immediately and the 2 second wait for every daemon slows things down
  81. unnessary.
  82. * Transform SGML DocBook into XML DocBook
