33. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: GCC isn't statically linked anymore by using
34. make -e LDFLAGS=-static, but by make BOOT_LDFLAGS=-static.</para></listitem>
35. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Removed kernel patch for gcc-3.0

44. <listitem><para>Chapters 5 & 6: Added a new patch for gcc-2.95.3
45. which fixes various problems such as the weak symbol
46. bug.</para></listitem>
47. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Bzip2 and shadowutils static libraries
48. are now put in /usr/lib instead of /lib. There are now also links
49. from /usr/lib to their dynamic libraries in /lib to enable the linker to
50. still find the dynamic versions.</para></listitem>
51. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: ncurses patch totally
52. removed. Static libraries now moved to /usr/lib and libcurses.a symlink
53. created manually. A symlink is also created from /usr/lib to the
54. dynamic libraries in /lib so that the linker still sees them.</para></listitem>
55. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Yacc script in bison page now uses exec bison
56. which replaces the shell.</listitem></para>
57. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Util-linux sed command has been replaced with a

66. regarding CXXFLAGS which has been made obsolete with the update
67. to groff-1.17.1</para></listitem>
68. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Moved the net-tools installation until after
69. sh-utils so that net-tools can replace sh-utils's
70. /bin/hostname.</para></listitem>
71. <listitem><para>Chapter 7: Changed $* into "$@" in the functions and rc
72. scripts. "$@" allows usage of quoted arguments with blanks.</para></listitem>
73. <listitem><para>Chapter 7: Added print_error_msg from the rcS script as
74. it appears in the rc script as well.</para></listitem>
75. </itemizedlist>
76. <para>3.0-pre4 - June 22nd, 2001</para>
77. <itemizedlist>
78. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Reordered the installations
79. alphabetically.</para></listitem>
80. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Moved the installations of ed and
81. patch into their alphabetical positions.</para></listitem>
82. <listitem><para>Chapter 7: Added [ ATTN ] warning message to
83. the functions script. When you attemp to start a service that's
84. already running or stop a service that's not running, it'll not
85. print FAILED anymore but [ ATTN ] along with "Already running"
86. or "Not running".</para></listitem>
87. <listitem><para>Chapter 9: Renamed the network-scripts
88. directory in nic-config.</para></listitem>
89. </itemizedlist>
90. <para>3.0-pre3 - May 12th, 2001</para>
91. <itemizedlist>
92. <listitem><para>Added numerous FHS compliance notes. These
93. instructions can be followed if one wishes to build a fully
94. FHS-compliant system.</para></listitem>
95. <listitem><para>Chapter 4: Updated the directory list to be more
96. FHS compliant. Mainly this meant adding the opt directories and
97. removing /usr/tmp and /usr/local/tmp</para></listitem>
98. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: We now copy the kernel include directories
99. instead of linking to them. This is theoretically safer if we plan on
100. upgrading the kernel.</para></listitem>
101. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Removed fileutils-patch. After upgrading
102. to fileutils-4.1 the patch isn't needed anymore.</para></listitem>
103. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Put back the instructions on how to

106. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Added the notice about an old version
107. of install-info.</para></listitem>
108. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Removed the installation of a static

110. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Changed bin86's installation from
111. "make PREFIX=/usr install" to "make INSTALL_OPTS="-m 755"
112. PREFIX=/usr install". This will prevent install from invoking strip -s
113. on the files. This fails because a couple of the installed files are
114. shell scripts rather than programs, so they can't be stripped.</para></listitem>
115. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Removed the ld.so section since we
116. only used the man pages and replaced it with a patch to man-pages.</para></listitem>
117. <listitem><para>Chapter 7+8: Moved the creation of /etc/fstab
118. to chapter 8.</para></listitem>
119. <listitem><para>Appendix A: Added missing descriptions of frcode,
120. code and bigram in the findutils-4.1 package.</para></listitem>
121. </itemizedlist>
122. <para>3.0-pre2 - April 14th, 2001</para>
123. <itemizedlist>
124. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Simplified ln commands.</para></listitem>
125. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Removed prefix=$LFS/usr from tar's
126. make install.</para></listitem>
127. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Removed --disable-nls from configuration
128. of programs that don't need it (bash, diffutils, gzip, sed,
129. m4).</para></listitem>
130. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Changed from "cd dir && make"
131. to "make -C dir" (gettext-static, sysvinit).</para></listitem>
132. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Beautified the static link process
133. for mawk.</para></listitem>
134. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Changed the links we create during
135. gcc-installation to $LFS/usr/bin/cpp.</para></listitem>
136. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Changed the procps installation
137. from sed'ing to an easier way.</para></listitem>
138. <listitem><para> Chapter 6: Changed all "rm file && ln -s dest
139. file" into "ln -sf file" (in glibc, bzip2 and gzip
140. installations).</para></listitem>
141. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Added a sed to fix a problem during
142. glibc-installation. pt_chown can not be installed setuid root,
143. because "root" is not known by glibc yet (kind of hen and
144. egg-problem).</para></listitem>
145. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Changed consoledata/tools to kbd, which
146. is more actively developed, and less of a pain to install.</para></listitem>
147. <listitem><para>Appendix A: Added the description of the Netkit-base
148. and Net-tools packages.</para></listitem>
149. </itemizedlist>
150. <para>3.0-pre1 - February 27th, 2001</para>
151. <itemizedlist>
152. <listitem><para>Converted the SGML source to XML.</para></listitem>
153. <listitem><para>Chapter 4: Tell the user to use cfdisk rather than
154. fdisk. The fdisk man page recommends cfdisk over fdisk because
155. it's more stable.</para></listitem>
156. <listitem><para>Chapter 4: Changed the wording to make it more general
157. as ext2 no longer is the only used file system. Reiser for example is
158. often used too now.</para></listitem>
159. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Added static mawk, texinfo and partially
160. gettext to faciliate the move of Glibc from Chapter 5
161. to Chapter 6.</para></listitem>
162. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Added Makedev to chapter 5. We don't create
163. the device files here, only copy the MAKEDEV script and make a temp
164. copy which will be used to create device files. This second file
165. (MAKEDEV-temp) doesn't contain user names and group names but only user
166. id's and group id's. We need a few device files to get Glibc installed,
167. but before GLibc is installed user and group names are not recognized yet;
168. only the numeric id's. This requires a slightly modified MAKEDEV script
169. which will be generated by patching the original one. This patching is done
170. here in chapter 5. Also, fixed the explanations on both
171. makedev installations.</para></listitem>
172. <listitem><para>Chapter 5: Recommended to install all the software
173. while logged in (or su'ed to) user root.</para></listitem>
174. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Added the fileutils-4.0 patch which is
175. needed to compile the fileutils package on Glibc-2.2 based systems
176. (such as the upcoming LFS-3.0 system).</para></listitem>
177. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Upgraded from gcc-2.95.2 to
178. gcc-2.95.2.1</para></listitem>
179. <listitem><para>Chapter 5+6: Moved Glibc from chapter 5 to
180. chapter 6</para></listitem>
181. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Changed libexecdir=/usr/bin in fileutils
182. to libexecdir=/bin</para></listitem>
183. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Updated Glibc installation instructions.
184. 'configparms' file creation has been deleted. No need to pick a compiler
185. (either distro's native or the /usr/local/gcc2952/bin/gcc one);
186. we're in chroot now so we'll use the one we have</para></listitem>
187. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Only copy the man pages from the
188. ld.so package. We don't need the ldconfig and ldd programs anymore;
189. Glibc-2.2.1 comes with good working versions.</para></listitem>
190. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Added the creation of the lex symlink
191. to the flex installation.</para></listitem>
192. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Changed $* into "$@" in the yacc script
193. during bison's installation. "$@" allows usage of quoted arguments
194. with blanks. </para></listitem>
195. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Fixed the man page installation during
196. console-tools' installation.</para></listitem>
197. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: When entering chroot the $TERM variable
198. inside chroot is set properly. This is accomplished by: chroot ...
199. -i HOME=/root TERM=$TERM...</para></listitem>
200. <listitem><para>Chapter 6: Merged the different sulogin lines from
201. the inittab file into one line.</para></listitem>
202. <listitem><para>Chapter 7: Fixed the delays in the killproc function
203. in the functions script. Now after kill, first check PIDs, then
204. sleep 2 if needed. More details can be read in the comments
205. in the script itself.</para></listitem>
206. <listitem><para>Chapter 7: Added the explanation how the runlevels
207. and boot process works when using the LFS scripts.</para></listitem>
208. <listitem><para>Chapter 10: Added this chapter. It contains "thanks
209. and good luck"notes and suggest creating the /etc/lfs-&version;
210. file</para></listitem>
