  1. These are the TODO items for the next LFS release (3.0):
  2. * Check to see if the man pages from the ld.so package also come with
  3. the man-pages package.
  4. * Incorporate LFS FAQ in the book
  5. * In console-tools-0.2.3/doc/man, there are more files ending in *.in
  6. that need to be renamed and copied to /usr/share/man. But before we
  7. copy any files we should modify them first and change the @datadir@
  8. occurances in those files to it's proper location (/usr/share IIRC)
  9. * Work on intel/preface/whoread.sgml and change the working to make it
  10. flow and sound nicer. Use
  11. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/whoread-draft.txt as a base
  12. (this is a draft by Oren Byer, based on an earlier draft by Gerard
  13. Beekmans).
  14. * After entering chroot check the $TERM variable and set it properly if
  15. needed
  16. * Add dedicated package version number entities (to avoid having to make
  17. changes to 2-7 files to just change the version number of a package).
  18. * Get rid of the codes 'pp' in chapter 5 entities, 'in' in chapter 6
  19. entities and the like with other chapters.
  20. * Re-arrange the list in chapter 3 to match the order in which
  21. packages are installed.
  22. * Find out why zoneinfo file are not installed when installing Glibc in
  23. chapter 6
  24. From an email to lfs-discuss:
  25. I agree. Let me ask you this, though. Is there anything that
  26. doesn't get
  27. installed besides the zoneinfo? I figured out how to install that
  28. manually, if it's all that's missing. It's simply:
  29. zic /path/to/glibc/source/timezone/<continent>
  30. If that's all it's missing, no need to install a static perl even.
  31. Another lead: possibly cross-compiler detection. Fix with:
  32. sed s,"cross-compiling = yes","cross-compiling = no", \
  33. config.make > config.make~ && mv config.make~ config.make
  34. make && make install
  35. * Full dependency list. This list isn't a list of "package a depends on
  36. package b" but a list like "package b depends on the files c, d and e
  37. from package f".
  38. * Bring the book up to speed with the current FHS specs.
  39. * Mention security patches that can be applied to packages.
  40. * At the end of the book suggest the user create the /etc/lfs-<version>
  41. file and give a few reasons why the user would want
  42. such a file (example: it's easy to forget after a while which LFS version
  43. you run; it makes debugging easier for us knowing which LFS version a user
  44. is running).
  45. * Check to see if we need the configparms file when installing Glibc.
  46. Rumours have it that the --prefix=/usr we use causes
  47. slibdir=/lib and sysconfdir=/etc to be assumed.
  48. * Explain how changing runlevels works. Use the file written by Simon
  49. Perreault at http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/runlevels.txt
  50. * Don't run lilo from inside chroot anymore. This causes severe problems
  51. sometimes including LILO not bootstrapping properly.
  52. * Bring back the PPC book (recreate from scratch using current intel
  53. book) using Jesse McCrosky's notes at
  54. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-notes.txt
  55. and the patch to the 'patch' package at:
  56. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-patch.patch
  57. * Add descriptions what the patches do we use (like the console-tools and gzip
  58. patches)
  59. * Try out Slackware's MAKEDEV script and see if it's any better than the
  60. currently used one. A copy can be found at
  61. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/Slackware-MAKEDEV
  62. * Sed'ing the MAKEDEV script gives us hda[1-20], hdb[1-20] and so forth.
  63. Mention that all of these can't actually be used due to kernel
  64. limitations (IDE goes to 16 max for example).
  65. * Type in chapter 2 - how to install software: Last paragraph:
  66. s/There is on exception/There is one exception/
  67. * Rewrite chapter 2 a little bit. Add that export LFS=/mnt/lfs could be
  68. added to root's .bash_profile/.bashrc (outside chroot) to make sure
  69. that between build sessions the variable is still set.
  70. * Add to chapter 2 how to use .gz files (not just .tar.gz)
  71. * Mention LFS should be installed as user root
  72. * 'init S' has been reported not to work properly. Test this.
  73. * Add netkit-base and net-tools to Appendix A.
  74. * Use /etc/HOSTNAME for setting the hostname. This is a bit more
  75. compliant with other distributions and therefore less confusing to
  76. people.
  77. * Suggest using this command to strip debug symbols after you finish
  78. chapter 6: find $LFS -type f -exec strip --strip-debug '{}' ';'
  79. * Modify the killproc function in the functions script. Right now it
  80. works roughly as follows: killl, wait 2 secs, check if pid's are gone.
  81. If not, kill with -KILL (aka -9), wait 2 secs, checkif pid's are gone.
  82. If no, print error message.
  83. Change this into: kill, don't wait 2 secs but check for pid's right
  84. away. If pid's are still there, then wait 2 seconds and kill -KILL,
  85. wait, if pid's still there, print error. Most daemons will exit
  86. immediately and the 2 second wait for every daemon slows things down
  87. unnessary.
