  27. <title>Installation of Glibc</title>
  28. <note><para>Some packages outside of LFS suggest installing GNU libiconv in
  29. order to translate data from one encoding to another. The project's home page
  30. (<ulink url="http://www.gnu.org/software/libiconv/"/>) says <quote>This library
  31. provides an <function>iconv()</function> implementation, for use on systems
  32. which don't have one, or whose implementation cannot convert from/to Unicode.
  33. </quote> Glibc provides an <function>iconv()</function> implementation and can
  34. convert from/to Unicode, therefore libiconv is not required on an LFS
  35. system.</para></note>
  36. <para>The Glibc build system is self-contained and will install
  37. perfectly, even though the compiler specs file and linker are still
  38. pointing at <filename class="directory">/tools</filename>. The specs
  39. and linker cannot be adjusted before the Glibc install because the
  40. Glibc autoconf tests would give false results and defeat the goal
  41. of achieving a clean build.</para>
  42. <para>The glibc-libidn tarball adds support for internationalized
  43. domain names (IDN) to Glibc. Many programs that
  44. support IDN require the full libidn library (see
  45. <ulink url="&blfs-root;view/svn/general/libidn.html"/>),
  46. not this add-on.
  47. Unpack the tarball from within the Glibc source
  48. directory:</para>
  49. <screen><userinput>tar -xf ../glibc-libidn-&glibc-version;.tar.bz2</userinput></screen>
  50. <para>In the vi_VN.TCVN locale, <command>bash</command> enters an infinite loop
  51. at startup. It is unknown whether this is a <command>bash</command> bug or a
  52. Glibc problem. Disable installation of this locale in order to avoid the
  53. problem:</para>

  55. <para>When running <command>make install</command>, a script called
  56. <filename>test-installation.pl</filename> performs a small sanity test
  57. on our newly installed Glibc. However, because our toolchain still points to the
  58. <filename class="directory">/tools</filename> directory, the sanity test would
  59. be carried out against the wrong Glibc. We can force the script to check the
  60. Glibc we have just installed with the following:</para>

  84. <important><para>In this section, the test suite for Glibc is
  85. considered critical. Do not skip it under any
  86. circumstance.</para></important>

  90. <para>On at least i686 you can expect to see failures in the <emphasis>test-double
  91. </emphasis> and <emphasis>test-idouble</emphasis> math tests with
  92. gcc-&gcc-version;, as well as an expected (ignored) failure in <emphasis>
  93. posix/annexc</emphasis>. These two failures in the math tests appear to be
  94. harmless.</para>
  95. <para>The Glibc test suite is highly dependent on certain functions of
  96. the host system, in particular the kernel. In certain circumstances,
  97. some failures are unavoidable. This is a list of the most common
  98. issues:</para>
  99. <itemizedlist>
  100. <listitem><para>The <emphasis>math</emphasis> tests sometimes fail in other tests
  101. when running
  102. on systems where the CPU is not a relatively new genuine Intel or authentic AMD.
  103. Certain optimization settings are also known to be a factor here.</para></listitem>
  104. <listitem><para>The <emphasis>gettext</emphasis> test sometimes fails due to
  105. host system issues. The exact reasons are not yet clear.</para></listitem>
  106. <listitem><para>If you have mounted the LFS partition with the
  107. <parameter>noatime</parameter> option, the <emphasis>atime</emphasis> test will
  108. fail. As mentioned in <xref linkend="space-mounting"/>, do not use the
  109. <parameter>noatime</parameter> option while building LFS.</para></listitem>
  110. <listitem><para>When running on older and slower hardware, some tests
  111. can fail because of test timeouts being exceeded.</para></listitem>
  112. </itemizedlist>
  113. <para>Though it is a harmless message, the install stage of Glibc will
  114. complain about the absence of <filename>/etc/ld.so.conf</filename>.
  115. Prevent this warning with:</para>

  128. libidn add-on has not been installed there.</para></listitem>

  131. <para>The locales that can make the system respond in a different
  132. language were not installed by the above command. None of the
  133. locales are required, but, if some of them are misssing, testuites of the
  134. future packages would skip important testcases.</para>
  135. <para>Individual locales can be installed using the <command>localedef</command>
  136. program. E.g., the first <command>localedef</command> command below combines
  137. the <filename>/usr/share/i18n/locales/de_DE</filename> charset-independent
  138. locale definition with the
  139. <filename>/usr/share/i18n/charmaps/ISO-8859-1.gz</filename> charmap definition
  140. and appends the result to the
  141. <filename>/usr/lib/locale/locale-archive</filename> file. The following
  142. instructions will install the minimum set of locales necessary
  143. for the optimal coverage of tests:</para>
