  2. <title>Installation of Sh-utils</title>
  3. <para>Before Sh-utils is installed, the sh-utils patch file may need to
  4. be applied. This patch is needed to avoid a conflict of variable names
  5. with certain Glibc versions (usually glibc-2.1.x) when compiling sh-utils
  6. statically. It is however safe to apply the patch even if you are
  7. running a different glibc version, so if you aren't sure, it's
  8. best to apply it.</para>
  9. <para>Apply the patch by running the following command:</para>

  11. <para>Install Sh-utils by running the following commands:</para>
  12. <para><screen><userinput>./configure --prefix=$LFS/usr --disable-nls &amp;&amp;
  13. make LDFLAGS=-static &amp;&amp;
  14. make install &amp;&amp;
  15. cd $LFS/usr/bin &amp;&amp;
  16. mv basename date echo false hostname $LFS/bin &amp;&amp;
  17. mv pwd sleep stty test true uname $LFS/bin &amp;&amp;
  18. mv chroot ../sbin</userinput></screen></para>
  19. <para>During the make install stage you will see the following warning:</para>
  20. <blockquote><screen>WARNING: insufficient access; not installing su
  21. NOTE: to install su, run 'make install-root' as root</screen></blockquote>
  22. <para>You can safely ignore that warning. You need to be logged in as root
  23. in order to install su the way sh-utils wants to install it, that being
  24. suid root. Because we don't need su during chapter 6, and su will be properly
  25. installed when we re-install sh-utils in chapter 6 anyways, you can just
  26. pretend you didn't see it.</para>
