  9. <title>Building LFS in Stages</title>
  10. <para>LFS is designed to be built in one session. That is, the
  11. instructions assume that the system will not be shut down
  12. during the process. That does not mean that the system has to
  13. be done in one sitting. The issue is that certain procedures
  14. have to be re-accomplished after a reboot if resuming LFS at
  15. different points.</para>

  17. <title>Chapters&nbsp;1&ndash;4</title>
  18. <para>These chapters are accomplished on the host system. When
  19. restarting, be careful of the following:</para>

  22. <para>Procedures done as the root user after Section 2.4 need to
  23. have the LFS environment variable set <emphasis>FOR THE ROOT
  24. USER</emphasis>.</para>

  29. <title>Chapter&nbsp;5&ndash;6</title>

  32. <para>The /mnt/lfs partition must be mounted.</para>

  35. <para>Threse two chapters must be done as user <emphasis>lfs</emphasis>.
  36. A <command>su - lfs</command> needs to be done before any task in these
  37. chapters. Failing to do that, you are at risk of installing packages to the
  38. host, and potentially rendering it unusable.</para>

  41. <para>The procedures in <xref linkend='ch-tools-generalinstructions'/>
  42. are critical. If there is any
  43. doubt about installing a package, ensure any previously expanded
  44. tarballs are removed, then re-extract the package files, and complete all
  45. instructions in that section.</para>

  50. <title>Chapter&nbsp;7&ndash;10</title>
