  1. These are the TODO items for the next LFS release (3.0):
  2. * chapter6/chroot.sgml - "Make sure you execute all the following
  3. commands in this chapter" -> "Make sure you execute all the following
  4. commands in this and the remaining chapters"
  5. * Note when you reboot the system and not done with the book yet you
  6. have to mount $LFS/proc again and enter chroot before continuing where
  7. you left of.
  8. * New shadow password suite link: ftp://ftp.pld.org.pl/software/shadow/
  9. * When installing Glibc in chapter 6 glibc-build/login/pt_chown isn't
  10. installed (we'll copy manually for now) and the mtrace program isn't
  11. build. Find out why.
  12. * Rewrite all of the mailinglist info (book and website) and give more
  13. information how you can set to things like digest, digest2, vacation
  14. and other useful modes.
  15. * Move the explanations in MAKEDEV's installation to the "Command
  16. * explanation" section (also move from chap6 to chap5)
  17. * Unmount $LFS/proc when done with chapter 7
  18. * Check out alternative findutils patch in
  19. * http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/findutils-4.1.alternative-patch
  20. * Check to see if the man pages from the ld.so package also come with
  21. the man-pages package.
  22. * Incorporate LFS FAQ in the book
  23. * In console-tools-0.2.3/doc/man, there are more files ending in *.in
  24. that need to be renamed and copied to /usr/share/man. But before we
  25. copy any files we should modify them first and change the @datadir@
  26. occurances in those files to it's proper location (/usr/share IIRC)
  27. * Work on intel/preface/whoread.sgml and change the working to make it
  28. flow and sound nicer. Use
  29. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/whoread-draft.txt as a base
  30. (this is a draft by Oren Byer, based on an earlier draft by Gerard
  31. Beekmans).
  32. * After entering chroot check the $TERM variable and set it properly if
  33. needed
  34. * Add dedicated package version number entities (to avoid having to make
  35. changes to 2-7 files to just change the version number of a package).
  36. * Get rid of the codes 'pp' in chapter 5 entities, 'in' in chapter 6
  37. entities and the like with other chapters.
  38. * Re-arrange the list in chapter 3 to match the order in which
  39. packages are installed.
  40. * Full dependency list. This list isn't a list of "package a depends on
  41. package b" but a list like "package b depends on the files c, d and e
  42. from package f".
  43. * Bring the book up to speed with the current FHS specs.
  44. * Mention security patches that can be applied to packages.
  45. * At the end of the book suggest the user create the /etc/lfs-<version>
  46. file and give a few reasons why the user would want
  47. such a file (example: it's easy to forget after a while which LFS version
  48. you run; it makes debugging easier for us knowing which LFS version a user
  49. is running).
  50. * Explain how changing runlevels works. Use the file written by Simon
  51. Perreault at http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/runlevels.txt
  52. * Don't run lilo from inside chroot anymore. This causes severe problems
  53. sometimes including LILO not bootstrapping properly.
  54. * Bring back the PPC book (recreate from scratch using current intel
  55. book) using Jesse McCrosky's notes at
  56. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-notes.txt
  57. and the patch to the 'patch' package at:
  58. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-patch.patch
  59. * Add descriptions what the patches do we use (like the console-tools and gzip
  60. patches)
  61. * Try out Slackware's MAKEDEV script and see if it's any better than the
  62. currently used one. A copy can be found at
  63. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/Slackware-MAKEDEV
  64. * Sed'ing the MAKEDEV script gives us hda[1-20], hdb[1-20] and so forth.
  65. Mention that all of these can't actually be used due to kernel
  66. limitations (IDE goes to 16 max for example).
  67. * Type in chapter 2 - how to install software: Last paragraph:
  68. s/There is on exception/There is one exception/
  69. * Rewrite chapter 2 a little bit. Add that export LFS=/mnt/lfs could be
  70. added to root's .bash_profile/.bashrc (outside chroot) to make sure
  71. that between build sessions the variable is still set.
  72. * Add to chapter 2 how to use .gz files (not just .tar.gz)
  73. * Mention LFS should be installed as user root
  74. * Single user mode has been reported not to work properly. Shutdown
  75. doesn't seem to unmount file systems and the shell doesn't come up
  76. properly when 'telinit S'.
  77. * Add netkit-base and net-tools to Appendix A.
  78. * Use /etc/HOSTNAME for setting the hostname. This is a bit more
  79. compliant with other distributions and therefore less confusing to
  80. people.
  81. * Suggest using this command to strip debug symbols after you finish
  82. chapter 6: find $LFS -type f -exec strip --strip-debug '{}' ';'
  83. * Modify the killproc function in the functions script. Right now it
  84. works roughly as follows: killl, wait 2 secs, check if pid's are gone.
  85. If not, kill with -KILL (aka -9), wait 2 secs, checkif pid's are gone.
  86. If no, print error message.
  87. Change this into: kill, don't wait 2 secs but check for pid's right
  88. away. If pid's are still there, then wait 2 seconds and kill -KILL,
  89. wait, if pid's still there, print error. Most daemons will exit
  90. immediately and the 2 second wait for every daemon slows things down
  91. unnessary.
  92. * Transform SGML DocBook into XML DocBook
