  3. <para>The Net-tools package contains the arp, hostname, ifconfig, netstat,
  4. plipconfig rarp, route, and slattach programs.</para>

  8. <sect3><title>arp</title>
  9. <para>arp is used to manipulate the kernel's ARP cache, usually to add
  10. or delete an entry, or to dump the ARP cache.</para></sect3>
  11. <sect3><title>hostname</title>
  12. <para>hostname, with its symlinks domainname, dnsdomainname, nisdomainname,
  13. ypdomainname, and nodename, is used to set or show the system's hostname (or
  14. other, depending on the symlink used).</para></sect3>
  15. <sect3><title>ifconfig</title>
  16. <para>The ifconfig command is the general command used to configure network
  17. interfaces.</para></sect3>
  18. <sect3><title>netstat</title>
  19. <para>netstat is a multi-purpose tool used to print the network connections,
  20. routing tables, interface statistics, masquerade connections, and multicast
  21. memberships.</para></sect3>
  22. <sect3><title>plipconfig</title>
  23. <para>plipconfig is used to fine-tune the PLIP device parameters, hopefully
  24. making it faster.</para></sect3>
  25. <sect3><title>rarp</title>
  26. <para>Akin to the arp program, the rarp program manipulates the system's
  27. RARP table.</para></sect3>
  28. <sect3><title>route</title>
  29. <para>route is the general utility which is used to manipulate the IP
  30. routing table.</para></sect3>
  31. <sect3><title>slattach</title>
  32. <para>slattach attaches a network interface to a serial line, i.e.. puts a
  33. normal terminal line into one of several "network" modes.</para></sect3>
