  4. <para>This book is divided into the following four parts:</para>

  6. <title>Part I - Introduction</title>
  7. <para>Part I explains a few important things on how to proceed with the
  8. installation, and gives meta information about the book (version, changelog,
  9. acknowledgments, associated mailing lists, and so on).</para>

  12. <title>Part II - Preparing for the build</title>
  13. <para>Part II describes how to prepare for the building process: making a
  14. partition, downloading the packages, and compiling temporary tools.</para>

  17. <title>Part III - Building the LFS system</title>
  18. <para>Part III guides you through the building of the LFS system: compiling
  19. and installing all the packages one by one, setting up the boot scripts, and
  20. installing the kernel. The resulting basic Linux system is the foundation
  21. upon which you can build other software, to extend your system in the way
  22. you like.</para>

  25. <title>Part IV - Appendix</title>
  26. <para>Part IV for the moment consists of just a single appendix: an alphabetical
  27. list of all the packages installed, for each package giving its official download
  28. location, its contents, and its installation dependencies.</para>
  29. <para>(Much of this Appendix A is integrated into Parts II and III. This
  30. enlarges the book somewhat, but we believe it makes for easier reading. Now
  31. you don't have to keep referencing the appendix while doing the installation.
  32. This going back and forth would be a real chore, especially if you're reading
  33. a text based version of the book.)</para>
