  1. These are the TODO items for the next LFS release (3.0):
  2. * Incorporate LFS FAQ in the book
  3. * In console-tools-0.2.3/doc/man, there are more files ending in *.in
  4. that need to be renamed and copied to /usr/share/man. But before we
  5. copy any files we should modify them first and change the @datadir@
  6. occurances in those files to it's proper location (/usr/share IIRC)
  7. * Work on intel/preface/whoread.sgml and change the working to make it
  8. flow and sound nicer. Use
  9. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/whoread-draft.txt as a base
  10. (this is a draft by Oren Byer, based on an earlier draft by Gerard
  11. Beekmans).
  12. * After entering chroot check the $TERM variable and set it properly if
  13. needed
  14. * Add dedicated package version number entities (to avoid having to make
  15. changes to 2-7 files to just change the version number of a package).
  16. * Get rid of the codes 'pp' in chapter 5 entities, 'in' in chapter 6
  17. entities and the like with other chapters.
  18. * Re-arrange the list in chapter 3 to match the order in which
  19. packages are installed.
  20. * Find out why zoneinfo file are not installed when installing Glibc in
  21. chapter 6
  22. From an email to lfs-discuss:
  23. I agree. Let me ask you this, though. Is there anything that
  24. doesn't get
  25. installed besides the zoneinfo? I figured out how to install that
  26. manually, if it's all that's missing. It's simply:
  27. zic /path/to/glibc/source/timezone/<continent>
  28. If that's all it's missing, no need to install a static perl even.
  29. Another lead: possibly cross-compiler detection. Fix with:
  30. sed s,"cross-compiling = yes","cross-compiling = no", \
  31. config.make > config.make~ && mv config.make~ config.make
  32. make && make install
  33. * Full dependency list. This list isn't a list of "package a depends on
  34. package b" but a list like "package b depends on the files c, d and e
  35. from package f".
  36. * Bring the book up to speed with the current FHS specs.
  37. * Mention security patches that can be applied to packages.
  38. * At the end of the book suggest the user create the /etc/lfs-<version>
  39. file and give a few reasons why the user would want
  40. such a file (example: it's easy to forget after a while which LFS version
  41. you run; it makes debugging easier for us knowing which LFS version a user
  42. is running).
  43. * Check to see if we need the configparms file when installing Glibc.
  44. Rumours have it that the --prefix=/usr we use causes
  45. slibdir=/lib and sysconfdir=/etc to be assumed.
  46. * Explain how changing runlevels works. Use the file written by Simon
  47. Perreault at http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/runlevels.txt
  48. * Don't run lilo from inside chroot anymore. This causes severe problems
  49. sometimes including LILO not bootstrapping properly.
  50. * Bring back the PPC book (recreate from scratch using current intel
  51. book) using Jesse McCrosky's notes at
  52. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-notes.txt
  53. and the patch to the 'patch' package at:
  54. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-patch.patch
  55. * Add descriptions what the patches do we use (like the console-tools and gzip
  56. patches)
  57. * Try out Slackware's MAKEDEV script and see if it's any better than the
  58. currently used one. A copy can be found at
  59. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/Slackware-MAKEDEV
  60. * Sed'ing the MAKEDEV script gives us hda[1-20], hdb[1-20] and so forth.
  61. Mention that all of these can't actually be used due to kernel
  62. limitations (IDE goes to 16 max for example).
  63. * Type in chapter 2 - how to install software: Last paragraph:
  64. s/There is on exception/There is one exception/
  65. * Rewrite chapter 2 a little bit. Add that export LFS=/mnt/lfs could be
  66. added to root's .bash_profile/.bashrc (outside chroot) to make sure
  67. that between build sessions the variable is still set.
  68. * Add to chapter 2 how to use .gz files (not just .tar.gz)
  69. * Mention LFS should be installed as user root
  70. * 'init S' has been reported not to work properly. Test this.
  71. * Add netkit-base and net-tools to Appendix A.
  72. * Use /etc/HOSTNAME for setting the hostname. This is a bit more
  73. compliant with other distributions and therefore less confusing to
  74. people.
  75. * Suggest using this command to strip debug symbols after you finish
  76. chapter 6: find $LFS -type f -exec strip --strip-debug '{}' ';'
  77. * Modify the killproc function in the functions script. Right now it
  78. works roughly as follows: killl, wait 2 secs, check if pid's are gone.
  79. If not, kill with -KILL (aka -9), wait 2 secs, checkif pid's are gone.
  80. If no, print error message.
  81. Change this into: kill, don't wait 2 secs but check for pid's right
  82. away. If pid's are still there, then wait 2 seconds and kill -KILL,
  83. wait, if pid's still there, print error. Most daemons will exit
  84. immediately and the 2 second wait for every daemon slows things down
  85. unnessary.
