  18. to assist with diagnosing and solving the problem, please include
  19. all relevant information in your request for help.</para>

  21. <title>Things to Mention</title>
  22. <para>Apart from a brief explanation of the problem being experienced,
  23. the essential things to include in any request for help are:</para>
  24. <itemizedlist>
  25. <listitem><para>The version of the book being used (in this case
  26. &version;)</para></listitem>
  27. <listitem><para>The host distribution and version being used to
  28. create LFS</para></listitem>
  29. <listitem><para>The package or section the problem was encountered in</para></listitem>
  30. <listitem><para>The exact error message or symptom being received</para></listitem>
  31. <listitem><para>Note whether you have deviated from the book at all </para></listitem>
  32. </itemizedlist>
  33. <note><para>Deviating from this book does <emphasis>not</emphasis>
  34. mean that we will not help you. After all, LFS is about personal
  35. preference. Being upfront about any changes to the established
  36. procedure helps us evaluate and determine possible causes of your

  40. <title>Configure Problems</title>
  41. <para>If something goes wrong during the stage where the configure
  42. script is run, review the <filename>config.log</filename> file. This
  43. file may contain errors encountered during configure which were not
  44. printed to the screen. Include those relevant lines if you need to ask
  45. for help.</para>

  48. <title>Compile Problems</title>
  49. <para>Both the screen output and the contents of various files are
  50. useful in determining the cause of compile issues. The screen output
  51. from the <command>./configure</command> script and the
  52. <command>make</command> run can be helpful. It
  53. is not necessary to include the entire output, but do include enough
  54. of the relevant information. Below is an example of the type of
  55. information to include from the screen output from <command>make</command>:</para>

  77. <para>This is not enough information to properly diagnose the problem
  78. because it only notes that something went wrong, not
  79. <emphasis>what</emphasis> went wrong. The entire section, as in the
  80. example above, is what should be saved because it includes the command
  81. that was executed and the associated error message(s).</para>
