  1. These are the TODO items for the next LFS release (3.0):
  2. * Rewrite all of the mailinglist info (book and website) and give more
  3. information how you can set to things like digest, digest2, vacation
  4. and other useful modes.
  5. * Move the explanations in MAKEDEV's installation to the "Command
  6. * explanation" section (also move from chap6 to chap5)
  7. * Unmount $LFS/proc when done with chapter 7
  8. * Check out alternative findutils patch in
  9. * http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/findutils-4.1.alternative-patch
  10. * Check to see if the man pages from the ld.so package also come with
  11. the man-pages package.
  12. * Incorporate LFS FAQ in the book
  13. * In console-tools-0.2.3/doc/man, there are more files ending in *.in
  14. that need to be renamed and copied to /usr/share/man. But before we
  15. copy any files we should modify them first and change the @datadir@
  16. occurances in those files to it's proper location (/usr/share IIRC)
  17. * Work on intel/preface/whoread.sgml and change the working to make it
  18. flow and sound nicer. Use
  19. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/whoread-draft.txt as a base
  20. (this is a draft by Oren Byer, based on an earlier draft by Gerard
  21. Beekmans).
  22. * After entering chroot check the $TERM variable and set it properly if
  23. needed
  24. * Add dedicated package version number entities (to avoid having to make
  25. changes to 2-7 files to just change the version number of a package).
  26. * Get rid of the codes 'pp' in chapter 5 entities, 'in' in chapter 6
  27. entities and the like with other chapters.
  28. * Re-arrange the list in chapter 3 to match the order in which
  29. packages are installed.
  30. * Find out why zoneinfo file are not installed when installing Glibc in
  31. chapter 6
  32. From an email to lfs-discuss:
  33. I agree. Let me ask you this, though. Is there anything that
  34. doesn't get
  35. installed besides the zoneinfo? I figured out how to install that
  36. manually, if it's all that's missing. It's simply:
  37. zic /path/to/glibc/source/timezone/<continent>
  38. If that's all it's missing, no need to install a static perl even.
  39. Another lead: possibly cross-compiler detection. Fix with:
  40. sed s,"cross-compiling = yes","cross-compiling = no", \
  41. config.make > config.make~ && mv config.make~ config.make
  42. make && make install
  43. * Full dependency list. This list isn't a list of "package a depends on
  44. package b" but a list like "package b depends on the files c, d and e
  45. from package f".
  46. * Bring the book up to speed with the current FHS specs.
  47. * Mention security patches that can be applied to packages.
  48. * At the end of the book suggest the user create the /etc/lfs-<version>
  49. file and give a few reasons why the user would want
  50. such a file (example: it's easy to forget after a while which LFS version
  51. you run; it makes debugging easier for us knowing which LFS version a user
  52. is running).
  53. * Check to see if we need the configparms file when installing Glibc.
  54. Rumours have it that the --prefix=/usr we use causes
  55. slibdir=/lib and sysconfdir=/etc to be assumed.
  56. * Explain how changing runlevels works. Use the file written by Simon
  57. Perreault at http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/runlevels.txt
  58. * Don't run lilo from inside chroot anymore. This causes severe problems
  59. sometimes including LILO not bootstrapping properly.
  60. * Bring back the PPC book (recreate from scratch using current intel
  61. book) using Jesse McCrosky's notes at
  62. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-notes.txt
  63. and the patch to the 'patch' package at:
  64. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/ppc-patch.patch
  65. * Add descriptions what the patches do we use (like the console-tools and gzip
  66. patches)
  67. * Try out Slackware's MAKEDEV script and see if it's any better than the
  68. currently used one. A copy can be found at
  69. http://download.linuxfromscratch.org/misc/Slackware-MAKEDEV
  70. * Sed'ing the MAKEDEV script gives us hda[1-20], hdb[1-20] and so forth.
  71. Mention that all of these can't actually be used due to kernel
  72. limitations (IDE goes to 16 max for example).
  73. * Type in chapter 2 - how to install software: Last paragraph:
  74. s/There is on exception/There is one exception/
  75. * Rewrite chapter 2 a little bit. Add that export LFS=/mnt/lfs could be
  76. added to root's .bash_profile/.bashrc (outside chroot) to make sure
  77. that between build sessions the variable is still set.
  78. * Add to chapter 2 how to use .gz files (not just .tar.gz)
  79. * Mention LFS should be installed as user root
  80. * 'init S' has been reported not to work properly. Test this.
  81. * Add netkit-base and net-tools to Appendix A.
  82. * Use /etc/HOSTNAME for setting the hostname. This is a bit more
  83. compliant with other distributions and therefore less confusing to
  84. people.
  85. * Suggest using this command to strip debug symbols after you finish
  86. chapter 6: find $LFS -type f -exec strip --strip-debug '{}' ';'
  87. * Modify the killproc function in the functions script. Right now it
  88. works roughly as follows: killl, wait 2 secs, check if pid's are gone.
  89. If not, kill with -KILL (aka -9), wait 2 secs, checkif pid's are gone.
  90. If no, print error message.
  91. Change this into: kill, don't wait 2 secs but check for pid's right
  92. away. If pid's are still there, then wait 2 seconds and kill -KILL,
  93. wait, if pid's still there, print error. Most daemons will exit
  94. immediately and the 2 second wait for every daemon slows things down
  95. unnessary.
